Open Mic: Our Spoken Word

Our spoken words are not usually funny
but filled with cynicism concerning our country,
our leaders, politics and social depravity.

Our faces must needs be wrenched,
to express the decadence we feel and experience
in the life of our beings, without touchy feelings.

No fluff on our gestures
and you dare not pose a question
that would somehow infiltrate our minds
to force us to think of a time,
when life was better,
even though we were poorer

At open mic, the spoken word must be harsh
to convey the stark realities of our lives
existing in the dark.

And of course we must pose
that ever revolving, but never answered question
of “how come?” before we close
I guess this is just a way to get your attention
I suppose.
